Northrup's Flying Wing Aircraft from the 1920's to today

At our house we mostly hear about airplanes built by Boeing. So we learned a lot attending a slideshow put on by a Northrup Aircraft retiree about the development of the "Flying Wing" aircraft that lead to the B-2 Stealth Bomber.

Amazing to find out that Northrup started experimenting with flying wing aircraft in the late 1920's.  This was so early in aircraft development game and just a few years after Lindbergh soloed across the ocean.

Our speaker took us through the many derivations and problems in development of the flying wing.  From the earliest wing designated the N1M thru the YB-49, from propeller-driven through jet-driven, from late 1920's to the late 1940's.

Much scrambling, testing, and modifications were done throughout the 1940's striving to get a flying wing bomber in use in World War II.

Finally in the late 1980's the ultimate flying wing, the B-2 Stealth Bomber, was developed by Northrup.  21 were ultimately built and 20 are still in active service.
