Most my friends don't even know what rebar is – but I do and we use it many times in our outdoor projects.

We enjoyed a tour of the Nucor Metal Factory in Seattle. Pretty amazing history as the facility has been in use for over 100 years.

They receive recycled metals from refrigerators to roller skates by the truck load.
The pieces are crunched into smaller pieces and then a huge magnet comes and picks up the metal pieces.
The magnet drops the scraps into a huge furnace where the metal is heated above a molten state to 3800 degrees and the impurities are dissolved.
From there, the molten metal is dumped into a ditch where it oozes and cools and is formed into bars.
And stacked outside still red. As they cool an identifying number drawn on the bars with solder. Next step, these bars are picked up by a crane and fed into another furnace. This double furnace process is making the steel stronger.
The bars are now red again and are still red as they are fed into smaller and smaller dimensions thru decreasing sizes of dies until the rebar is sized properly.

They produce 5 grades lengths from 20 to 60' feet and 17 sizes (1/4" to 3").
Traveling along, the red rebar bar is carried to a cool off area from where it is finally bundled to be carried away.
