Today we motored into the state of Kansas, one of only two we have not visited in our previous wanderings. The last one is Nebraska, which we will get to in the next three weeks. Then what??? Our little map will be filled with silver states, and not a black spot will remain, except for the Great Lakes.
We had planned to stay at the Liberal Elks, who showed in our Elk "catalog" as having four or five spots. But wait --- the city has a park a bit out of town with camping spots, and many species of animals and birds. We'd always rather find a small municipal or county park with "critters" than a parking lot in town. So --- off we went in search of Arkalon Park.
I suppose if the description of the park had included the phrase "two miles of one-lane dirt road", we may have opted out. If it said "two miles of rutted and washboard one-lane dirt", we'd most likely have skipped it. If it had defined "dirt" as the absence of any gravel at all, most certainly we'd not have come. But it didn't -- so here we are.
And glad we came! Not withstanding the fact that Curvy, the CR-V, looks like a brown blob behind us, the park is a total joy. Two hundred or so folks are here, filling all the picnic spots and many of the RV spots. Dozens of kids zipping around on bikes, playing soccer, football, baseball, frisbee, swinging on swings, and finding Easter eggs. Families doing things together, for goodness sakes! We thought that was a lost art!
And smiling at us non-locals as we hiked the loop. Giving Miss Lily a pat on the head. It was one of the most enjoyable days we've ever had.
