Reid Harbor on Stuart Island is one of our favorite spots. A long harbor with lots of dinghy exploring. 3 docks and tons of buoys. A couple of small islands (really rocks). A beach. And access to the county road. Several trails and a cross-island trail to another marine park.
From the county road we can hike all the way out to the lighthouse at the most northwestern part of the lower US. Or just up the hill from where park our dinghy is the island school, the library, the Teacherage Museum, and the Treasure Chest!
Of course, we hiked to the Treasure Chest and got our t-shirts for the year. The Teacherage Museum is always kept up-to-date with current island activities and the activities of the school kids in the previous year. The school now has two kids attending – two sisters. It is neat to find out about the field trips they have taken and about presenters who come to teach about music or science or geography.
While we were moored on one of the docks, a group of boaters with a bunch of kids showed a movie on the dock each night. Wasn't that fun! We could even watch it from the warmth inside our boat.
While we were moored here summer finally arrived. We had temperatures in the 80's a couple days. Nice!
We dinghied the bay. Found another osprey nest.
Searched for and found a geocache on one of the little islands. The view from there is so tropical.
But, as it so happens, a storm came through with gale winds and everybody was scrambling to a safe place to sit it out. By this time we were safely tied to a buoy. But after 6 boaters tried and failed to attach to a free buoy losing lines and pike poles, Dean and a couple other guys went out and helped attach the lines to the buoys. Think he has a new job title now: Buoy Tender.
