TREE DOWN -------- this time on purpose
In February, we wrote about the neighbor's tree that fell on our garage. That tree was estimated at 50 to 60 feet tall. But the same neighbor had another one about 20 feet from the one that fell, estimated at 110 to 120 feet and measuring at just under six feet across at the butt!! Big guy!! A Sequoia.

Since both the trees that were close to the Sequoia and helped shield it from wind were now gone, we wondered about it's stability in a storm. We, and an arborist, felt that due to it's size, it could flatten the garage (again) and wreak havoc with our three-year-old house.

At first, the neighbor was amenable to having the tree taken down (at our expense), but reneged after we had received and accepted a bid. There followed a protracted series of events including another arborist giving her opinion of the health of the tree, an "agent" (actually another neighbor) designated as our contact point since the tree owner had a spell of bad health, and eventually notification that the "agent" was replaced by a lawyer (he never called; we kept working with the agent #1), and a few "gimmies" the the tree owner felt we would owe her if she allowed us on her property to remove the tree.

In the course of investigating (pricing) one of the gimmies, we got a lower bid on removing the tree --- one that would allow us to do most of the gimmies for basically the same dollars. Presto!! Permission re-granted; new bid accepted and scheduled (before another change of mind); the crew arrived, and the tree came down.

One less turd floating in the punchbowl! We sleep better, and have a bunch more light coming in on the west side of our house. The garage roof destroyed in February by another tree will be replaced next week --- if the rains don't come and the creeks don't rise.
