Nothing much happened at Fort Laramie. The fort didn't participate in battles or protect settlers from native attacks. From what we learned there was a lot of work just maintaining the buildings, stoking fires, cooking for the troops. There are no trees around so firewood had to be brought from 60 miles away.
A couple treaties were signed here – pretty sure the US didn't uphold their end of the bargain.
Fort Laramie was built on the site of fur trading posts. And during the time the Oregon Trail was used, a private trading post was still on the grounds. The westward heading travelers counted on re-stocking their supplies at the post as well as the troops stationed at the fort.
All the buildings left on the grounds are original and furnished as if in the 1860's. Some foundations and walls are left in place. Story has it that when the army abandoned the fort, locals came in and scavenged for building materials (remember there were no trees around).
