Somewhere we read that Sucia means foul. There are certainly a lot of reefs and rocks in odd places here. A boater needs to mind their charts and depth sounder to keep from alighting between a rock and a hard place.
We think that this rock ought to be called The Ogre of Sucia Island!
There are many buoys and two docks. Many campsites and shelters and even a few Adirondack cabins. There are at least 10 miles of trails and 5 bays to explore. Need I say that this is a favorite for many boaters!
We've found two geocaches so far on the island and hiked 7 miles.
One evening, we were invited aboard a sailboat to celebrate a young lad's birthday. The boat was decorated with streamers and there were candles and a cake. But, oh oh, the next morning when taking down the streamers, a line to one of the sails (this is not nautical talk) slipped out of the captain's hand and traveled to the top of the mast. Well, as they told us, there would be no more sailing until this line was retrieved. Since this was a charter boat, the adults put their heads together and figured out how to make a sling and haul one of them up the mast. They did just fine. This fellow was pretty brave.
We have dinghied around for many hours and yesterday while exploring a small cove, we found this baby seal who had been left safe by his mom while she went fishing. We didn't get too close to make them nervous.
Today we are in Echo Bay on Sucia. This is the biggest bay and one we've always felt was exposed to the winds and the seas. Since we are on a buoy we aren't too worried about anything that comes up. And the weather has been so nice. Isn't this a beautiful setting. Mt Baker in the background and calm seas....
Well, shame on me! Should have knocked on wood! Because within 1/2 hour winds came up and we counted 8 boats dragging anchors and drifting around until way after dark! We were safe from the seas but a little worried about the drifters!
