Lava Beds National Monument, Tule Lake, CA

Friends told us about this park so we had to check it out on our way home.

What a nice surprise.

The lava beds are what we call lava tubes in Washington.

The tubes or beds are formed by hot lava running and the upper layer solidifying before the center.

The park has about 500 of these caves with about two dozen open for the general public.  They loaned us lanterns to take while exploring the caves.

We hiked through 3 of them before it started SNOWING!

(The 2nd time it has snowed on us as we headed north.)

Looks like about 6" of snow.

We were comfy in our nice RV.  We had plenty of rations, battery, and heat.

We just sat back and enjoyed the rabbits scurrying across the snow and the deer searching for a nibble of grass.

After 3 days, the snow melted and we headed north into Oregon. Got snow sprinkles in the Bend area and going over the pass at Mt Hood but nothing like what we'd been in.
