Weekend in Memphis

We stayed at the T.O.Fuller State Park just outside of downtown Memphis.

Though the entry road to the park was lined with dead businesses and homes with bars on the windows and doors, the park was clean and neat and secure.

On the grounds, we explored the Chucakalissa Indian mounds and were amazed by this stand of bamboo. That’s the tall guy there that looks so small!

Tamara caught up with us here.  She was traveling the SE with her Journey Back In Time truck.  We had a great visit.

We explored downtown Memphis. Walked Beale Street - home of the Blues (the street was very quiet on a Sunday morning).

Drove past Elvis's Graceland. This area of town was NEVER the high class area of town.

We went to Lansky’s at the Peabody Hotel. Mr. Lansky was the fellow who 'dressed Elvis'. A very nice gentleman. He still comes to work every day in the clothing store run with his son. On display in the store were many guitars from famous musicians.

We timed our visit to the Peabody Hotel for the march of the Peabody Ducks.

We visited them at their penthouse atop the hotel, and then watched the red carpet royal treatment as the ducks emerged from the elevator, crossed the carpet, and jumped into their 'day' fountain.

We cruised the Memphis waterfront, took a wrong turn and got to cross the Mississippi into Arkansas.

Back on track and back on the east bank of the Mississippi River, we headed south to Tunica, MS.
Tunica is a rapidly growing casino town which just happens to have a very great new museum, the Mississippi River Museum. Fabulous displays.

Information on early civilizations and exploration along the river, commerce, paddlewheelers, forts, floods, dikes, and the Army Corp of Engineers.

We had almost 3 hours to see all the displays before the museum closed for the night. Could have used more time.
